Mobile friendly websites and QR-Code design

With more than five billion web-enabled mobile devices world wide, strategies to ensure websites work on those platforms are becoming increasingly important.

Edit communication designers Bethany Ryan and Connie Kolostoubis have been researching and testing code, file sizes, functionality and user experience on smart phones to find out exactly what works and what doesn't. More importantly, they bring to Edit the knowledge to produce engaging web-enabled mobile content.

We also have been researching QR (Quick Response) Codes. A QR-Code is a two-dimensional image that can be read by software on a smart phone via free downloadable iTunes application. The camera on the phone scans the QR-Code which then automatically directs users to mobile-optimised online content for more information.

Created by Toyota subsidiary Denso-Wave in 1994, QR codes were initially used for tracking parts by vehicle manufacturers. With mobile phones and internet-enable tablets like the iPad becoming smarter, faster and cheaper, savvy application of QR-Codes can drive brand awareness and website traffic and revenues.

Users of web-enabled phones can download a QR-Code reader from the 'App Store'. The first two QR-Codes displayed below laounch our homepage. The bottom code captures business card content including name, location, phone, fax and email address. QR-Codes generate SMS messages, gift voucher downloads and links to social media pages.
